The Magisteria: Magic and Technology

The Magisteria of Magic and Technology
Magisteria draws upon the concept of the magisterium as a domain of teaching authority. In the case of the game, this refers to the twin magisteria of ancient magic and hyper-futuristic technology.

Each character will be expected to select one of the two paths and to pursue mastery of that domain. However, it should be noted that Magisteria is not a faction game in the conventional sense. Techies and magic users will often work together towards shared objectives and the greater good. Much competition will be friendly in nature, or at least driven towards the aim of forcing both sides to constantly better themselves. That said, the two groups do have different and often irreconcilable worldviews and approaches.

Below is a general overview of the two paths with the aim of giving players an idea of what to expect for both.

The Magic Path

+ As a general rule, the magic path will feature more fantasy-esque narrative and trappings. Beings from conventional fantasy lore, such as faeries, elves, and nymphs will be more represented in this path.
+ Characters will interact with the natural world more frequently. The plot will involve journeys into the district for Agriculture, the Temple District, and the Harbor District, with the intention of uncovering the mysteries, history, and alliances/oppositional forces within. Characters who successfully attain path mastery will be granted the keys to Mysticaire District and its ancient, hidden wisdom
+ Allies and enemies will consist of wizards, mages, and witches [among others].
+ Examples of tools for this path are grimoires and runes.
+ Characters may encounter sacred and divine creatures, either in the world at large or as emissaries in dreams.
+ Special locations for this path will include otherworldly realms.

The Tech Path

+ As a general rule, the tech path will feature more cyberpunk or science fiction-esque narrative and trappings. Beings more associated with sci-fi or cyberpunk, such as androids, cyborgs, or sentient AI will be more represented in this path.
+ Characters will interact much more with the urban metropolis. The plot will center largely on the districts for Business, Entertainment, and Market. There will still be mysteries, secret histories, alliances, and oppositional forces to uncover, just as with the magic path. Characters who successfully attain path mastery will be granted the keys to the Aetherium District and its vast repositories of cutting-edge technology.
+ Allies and enemies will consist of cyber samurai, hacker groups, and investigative specialists (i.e. detective types) with high levels of technical expertise.
+ Examples of tools for this path are AR/VR goggles and mecha suits.
+ Characters may encounter highly unique tech fauna, such as the metallic butterflies of Magisteria.
+ Special locations for this path will include the Magisteria virtual overlay. [Like the Metaverse, except the actually cool sci-fi version.]

Note: The Institutions, particularly the Order of Mysterium and the CTA, are central to these two paths. To pursue mastery of tech or magic, one will need to form alliances with members of the Institutions and work towards formally joining them. These paths constitute the means of proving one's self, as well as providing goals for what PCs will do before and after they join.
