Character Suitability
We currently accept:
- Canon characters and OCs, including tabletop OCs and malleable protagonists.
- Most ancient historical figures and some less controversial historical figures from within recent centuries, so long as they are reasonably fictionalized. Mods will exercise personal discretion, but most characters from Fate/ or other similar series (BSD) are generally fine.
- Silent protagonists, as long as they have an established history and personality.
- Alternative series duplicates (e.g. King Arthur from BBC’s Merlin and Artoria from Fate/)
- Non-humanoids, so long as they have sentience in order to interact with the setting. Note: Large characters (ex: Transformers) may need to be modified for size.
- Characters who are dead in canon, ex: ghosts, vampires.
- CRAUs with ONE prior game as a CRAU.
- Fandom OCs.
- Controversial figures from recent history (ex: Hitler, Stalin), regardless of whether they are fictionalized or not.
- Adaptation duplicates (e.g. Edward Elric from the FMA manga and Edward Elric from the FMA anime)
- More than one character from the same series that have significant relationships (e.g. one player may not app Luke AND Princess Leia from Star Wars) .
▶ There are currently no caps on players, casts, or characters. Mod hopes for the game to stay uncapped indefinitely, but this is subject to how the game develops. Right now, it's a small game anyway.
▶ Age limits: We generally prefer characters to be at least 15, but some cases may be made for younger characters. This is more of a case by case issue than a hard and fast line. Younger characters may receive additional suitability questions around how they'll adapt in this setting, as it is one which deals with mature themes and topics. For anything sexual, characters should be 15+.Getting Started
What does my character have with or on them at the time of arrival?
They will have anything that is currently on their person, up to what one can carry in a backpack. They may have one animal with them, provided it is no larger than a dog. If they have a gun or two on their person, yes, those can come along, but they'll be "offline" to start with: no ammo, for example, or players can make up their own nerfs. Characters will be informed about the in-game reasoning for restrictions to start with. Magisteria isn't exactly an open-carry city... though you may eventually find the natives can go plenty hard on the tech weaponry themselves.
What does my character receive upon arrival?
They will receive two things:
1. The aXess Link device. In its most basic form, it resembles a smartphone, but it can be adapted to have other shapes if the owner desires. It can be worn in many ways, i.e. as a watch or jewelry. It comes with AR glasses that can be activated via fingerprint scan. It's an all-purpose device for stats tracking, from general fitness to Synthesis to Bios levels. Powered by bioelectric energy, the device stays charged as long as it’s on a PC’s body. This device will also be used for communication via the network (video, audio, text) and the creation of holographic projections or other AR/VR spaces at a small to medium scale.
2. Starting funds: Characters will receive four months’ worth of living expenses. After this, they will still receive a small stipend for basic needs, but it will be insufficient to cover housing at the central apartments. Characters will be expected to pursue employment if they wish to maintain the standard of living they enter the game with. Opportunities will become available via events and quests.
What kind of monetary system does Magisteria/Medeas have? Is it all electronic, or is there still currency?
The banking system is electronic, but are two forms of coinage: quins, roughly equivalent to dimes, and decas, roughly equivalent to quarters. In case you need change for something, the coinage exists, but most transactions will be virtual.
What is Activity Check like?
Check-in!
Note: We have this policy to make things less onerous on players, and also because we don't want to bother keeping track of counting comments. Such time could be better used on building shit like weird fauna. But this is not an invitation to character squat. It's a courtesy that extends good faith, so please keep that in mind.
What if I need to take a hiatus from the game?
Fill out the hiatus form here.
Does my character have to stay in the starter housing complex, or can they find housing elsewhere in the city?
They can find housing elsewhere, but the starter complex is centrally located, so it's the best option for access to travel and most job opportunities.
Does my character have to stay in Magisteria?
Yes. The island is encircled by an impenetrable barrier.
What about that tattoo?
The tattoo would seem to be a mystery to everyone, Otherworlders and natives alike. It can be any color, size, or shape, but the one thing that's certain is it's a new addition to the most recently arriving Otherworlders who are entering via the Infinity Corridors, and that through whatever means or mechanism, it's linked to these Otherworlders' ability to produce new Bios and engage in Synthesis.Setting
What is daily life like in Magisteria?
Most of the city is a hyper-futuristic metropolis, but though much societal and technological progress has been achieved, life continues to have its share of challenges. However, all natives are guaranteed jobs and a living wage, so while there is class stratification, it's not as extreme as it could be.
What kind of transportation options are available in the city?
Busses and all forms of rail travel (subways, monorails, and so on) are subsidized by the city. Personal transportation is available in the form of ground vehicles, flying/hover crafts, magic carpets, enchanted carriages, etc., but any individually owned vehicle is not free and must be purchased.
Because of the presence of the barrier, planes and other forms of group air travel are relatively rarer. With the level of advanced technology it contains, it's certainly possible that Magisteria has a space program, or that such programs exist throughout the greater world of Medeas. However, information is not readily broadcast to the public.
In some cases, fast travel -- essentially teleportation, of either the magic or technical variety -- may become available to characters.
What are the natives’ attitudes towards new Otherworlders?
Otherworlders have been arriving in Magisteria for a long time now, so most natives are used to them. Attitudes may vary among individuals, but their appearances are relatively normal to most.
What can my character find out about Magisteria? Medeas?
Good question! And a very open-ended one. Your character is free to pursue research via InfinityNet, Magisteria's advanced Internet system, as well as The Central Library in High Rise Village (Business District), and there will also be opportunities for physical exploration via events and player plots. We encourage all forms of exploration, and if you have questions about what findings may come up when pursuing a particular question, or path... as well as what information may not come up, or the limitations of information (pesky palimpsests!), mods will appraise along the way.
What is the in-game calendar for Magisteria? Does the world have a moon or moons?
The 12 months of Medeas/Magisteria are:Celestria
Aurorium
Equinoxia
Solanaris
Luminarae
Solstium
Lunarian
Ecliptia
Nebularia
Galaxion
Stellaris
Cosmara
For simplicity's sake, the calendar is 1:1 on days of the year. Holidays for Magisteria will be revealed via events and will later appear on game page lore. (Mod note: This is an area I haven't plotted for much yet, world-specific holidays and their possibilities, I mean. I would be very interested in ideas from players here.)
As for the world's moons, Magisteria currently has three. I say "currently" because there are rings of debris around the world which, according to the stories, constitute two moons destroyed in ~ancient Conflict~. The moons are named Nelore, Cethea, and Nyx, with the last being the smallest and darkest.Plot and Game Structure
Can players affect the plot of this game?
Currently, we are planning to have certain game outcomes be determined by voting. This may include both general event outcomes and opportunities related to the two plot paths. For the latter, members of each group will be eligible to vote on outcomes for respective sides.
There will also be opportunities for RNG, including in events and for plot-oriented missions or higher level quests.
So, you've talked about the two Institutions for tech and magic, and the two paths. Do I have to join them or pursue a specific path? Can I stay neutral, and how do I join either?
Great questions! The short answer to the first question is yes: players will need to pick a specialty because it's woven into the narrative and gameplay, and is part of the general arc for collective growth. As for "neutrality," how much a given PC feels an ideological affiliation with their chosen discipline is up to player discretion.
We want to make things as fair as possible for both the early applicants and those who come later. We do want to encourage people to apply and participate in the game plot as early as possible via the system outlined above, by giving those PCs mentorship opportunities to newer PCs, and we want to encourage newer PCs by expecting established PCs to pay it forwards in various ways, helping to fast track their newer colleagues, and we think this is the most fair solution to balancing both.
Can I write sex in this game?
Absolutely! Just be sure to label your threads appropriately.
There are two big caveats:
1. No pregnancy plots. Yes, we know that it's established that Otherworlders have been marrying and having children in Magisteria for generations, but for gameplay purposes, this is just too thorny, so we're treating it as gamebreaking. If you need an in-world reason, it could be that the ability to produce Bios has rendered current Otherworlders incapable of producing children in Magisteria.
2. No sexual interactions with named established NPCs. This is also considered breaking the setting. You can, of course, make up interactions of such a nature with randos in the red light district, if you so desire.
If you ever feel unsure about anything, please ask a mod and always err on the side of labeling.
But will there be like, horny prompts and events?
There will totally be some spice in the game world and various thirst opportunities.
Can I canon-update once I'm in the game? If so, how?
Yes. Please see the canon update page.
While in-game magic and tech don't play nicely, will my character’s canonical magic/tech work with the in-game versions?
Yes: Bios supplies all forms of powers. It can provide mana bullets for Emiya Kiritsugu or supply power to Tony Stark for the Iron Man suit. For more information about powers and how PCs will interface with them, please see the Powers page.Other
Can my character start a business?
Absolutely! We just ask that you make a reasonable effort on the timeline for your character acquiring the funding and other necessities for such an endeavor; for example, it can be assumed that it would take most characters at least a few months to procure the necessary means of financing a business. But yes, opportunities will certainly open with plot progression.
What if my character commits a crime, or damages the city somehow?
If the authorities become aware of it, there certainly could be repercussions, including legal trouble and/or power nerfing. That said, if players would like to explore plots involving causing some mischief... there may be some opportunities along the way, and you can also venture ideas in player plots so mods will work with on ideas.
Are there supernatural beings in this game? What kinds?
Well, there is a category for them on the Taxonomy page. But as mentioned, some details will be revealed in game as surprises!
Can my character die in the game? What happens? Is death permanent?
If this happens, they will have a strange, out-of-body experience, summarized as follows:
- Your character will experience a vision of goddess Iméra-Nýchta.
- She will give you two options – to remain dead or to give her something in exchange for the trouble she must go through to revive you. This can be anything – a limb, a memory, a favored weapon – however, it must be something meaningful to you. Your character will not be revived without making a bargain with the goddess.
- Your character will then wake up at the site where they first arrived.
- Your character may be revived more than once via this method, but it’s best not to test the goddess’s patience too often.
Can my character know about Medeas, given the occasional portals that have opened up? If my character is very old or a historian in their world, is it possible?
No, because those who have entered Medeas via Infinity Corridors have not returned to their home worlds, so the knowledge flow has been in one direction only.
QUESTIONS/ANSWERS FROM INTEREST CHECK:
APPS: Player-made AUs?
Info on Discord server and is using it necessary for plot? (Short answer: no)
Jiyu created and is handling.
On using it for plot: Well, I personally am of the teal deer, so I think I would likewise recommend one use the OOC posts primarily for plot. I think Discord servers are better for lighter fare or linking TLs.
Do non-human types need to be made human-sy via nerfs?
I know some of y'all's PCs would, too. Don't front. Magisteria knows they would, too.
That said, if you want to say well something something Bios and the nerf somehow rendered more human to make an arc where they go back, rule of cool and narrative can be arranged.
I have E-rank luck, so what about this RNG business?
If an RNG has a competitive luck element, I will note that and it'll be optional.
Actually, since this has been asked, I'll say, the TDM features one challenge prompt with a luck element as part of the competition. I designed it for those who specifically like this kind of scenario. It's a capped RNG and I will note the parameters. While it has a bonus, it's nothing that is mandatory to gameplay. If E-rank luck makes you nervous, there will be other TDM prompts.

Would they be applicable or fall into the canon OC territory? In addition, would one be able to app a Warrior of Light to this game (assuming there isn't one already)?
no subject
Fandom OCs to my mind are characters whom are slotted by fans into a canon universe as opposed to a type of more blank archetype provided by a canon for players to build onto. That is how I would characterize the difference.
no subject
Azem, is a bit different as they aren't a playable character. They are a canon character that we're purposely given very little information about because once upon a time the WoL was them (as in the same soul sundered and reborn time and time again). The WoL has no memories of being Azem and Azem is their own person, but there are some things that intrinsically tied to the soul in FFXIV (such as Azem's wanderlust and desire to help people). Everything else about them, however, is up to interpretation, much like the WoL (again, basically a second OC for the player to create in the canon).
That makes sense as far as your definition of a fandom OC goes.

This is something I waffled on. The game is sex-friendly, but all 18+ elements are completely avoidable. However, it will deal with a lot of mature subject matter and themes, including quite a bit of PVE conflict with dangerous situations.
In general, there's not a hard age rule so much as, if someone wants to app a character who is younger, part of the suitability screening would be, what attributes would the character have to help them get by in the setting? Things like the expectation of characters to get jobs. That sort of thing. For now, it's on a case by case basis, as there are some young people who are incredibly scrappy.

Totally unrelated second question! Do characters who already have advanced scientific/technical knowledge in canon get "nerfed" somehow?
no subject
For example, a fire bender would likely quickly pick up the game's fire magic, and then when and as they get access to canon powers, they would be an especially OP fire mage, as they would be basically double-dipping. But of course, precisely because they have that covered, a player might want to have them also pick up other forms of magic, or focus on doing something different and non-conventional with the abilities. And of course they could also pursue the tech path and go down a different path entirely, perhaps choosing to make mecha suits which they wear while bending. This would not be considered playing both sides, but rather picking up a new discipline. However, they would not be able to pick up new magic in game due to the attitudes of those who would train them.

Obviously, she couldn't use it to just leave the game, but would it be possible for her to bring the building itself with her, or to regain it at a later point? Possibly with the ability to teleport still present, but limited to moving around the available game world?

- if a character has built-in weapons, like a robot having guns as a part of their body, I assume these will also be offline/jammed/only able to shoot peanuts at first?
- on the TDM, you said that characters with cybernetic abilities will be nerfed/unable to connect to outside systems. If they came in with a robot "pet" that they connect to digitally, would they still have access to it? (for details, the "pet" in question is just a flying camera basically, with no sentience of its own.)
- can we assume the aXess Link has text-to-speech and speech-to-text?
no subject
-- yep! I think I mentioned this, but y'all can kind of make up the details as you want for this.
-- how do they carry the "pet"? if it's something they carry on their person or something they identify mentally as a "pet," then yes, they can still connect to it. I think greenlighting it is reasonable under the umbrella of "anything that can fit in a backpack/one animal companion no larger than a dog"
-- yes!
no subject
As for the "pet", they are small enough to fit in pockets! Murderbot wouldn't call them "pets" since that word has some ~connotations~ for it, but they're important equipment for it and help it interact with the environment. One character actually refers to them as "medical [equipment]" for it, like an accessibility device.

For my part, I think that Emet-Selch did indeed get briefly put back in a corporeal body but afterwards chose to go back to the place where souls linger before rebirth. So he kind of...voluntarily unmade the magic that made him corporeal.

Does "everyone can be played as a potential Servant type" help, lol? If this doesn't relate/isn't useful, let me know and I'll try to clarify more.

In Cyberpunk 2077/Edgerunners, there's a thing called BrainDances, which are essentially hyper virtual reality datachips you can insert to get whatever experience is being sold. Does something like that exist in Magisteria?
no subject
The one tangible example I have alluded to has been that sex workers record cyber-profiles of themselves so clients can have access to sexual experiences with them without any messiness, physical or emotional. It's a great accessibility option for ace/aro types who might still have vivid mental landscapes or want sexual/romantic experiences without the aforementioned messiness/complications. Lucy would encounter this a lot at Red Roses, as many of the workers there have cyber-profiles. Of course, as with Edgerunners, BDs could have a lot of other experiences.
[If you would like to propose a Magisterian name for them, I am also fine with out-sourcing that and other details to players here, as I would want a Magisterian-specific term for "BDs", lol.]
Added to the above, I have not decided what Magisteria would allow as far as the darker sides of BDs that Edgerunners showcased. Obviously, this being a more Utopian society, I would tend to think BDs like gorey murders or people's last moments would be outlawed as snuff -- though I would be open to the idea of some black market/underground for such fare, certainly (could be something to add to the Market District, which I still haven't formally rolled out content for, but am planning to, so things to keep in mind). There might be more legal use cases for that sort of thing like criminal profiling/tracking by vigilante or law groups, however. And there might be Dark Shit, but in the more safely sanitized context of people's fantasies/fiction. [Though it's interesting to think whether some fantasies might be dark or dangerous-feeling enough to cause concern of actual violence or whatever ... basically, what I'm saying is I haven't really come up with all the legal parameters around design/content yet, so I would be open to ideas. I'll probably link this comment in the Disco so others can propose ideas here too.]
no subject
Off the top of my head, instead of BD, they could be called, idk, NeuroFlow or MemoryMesh or DreamDive or something like that!
no subject
And yes, I like your ideas. I'll think on it more, but if you want to go ahead and experiment with the "DreamDives," that's fine.
no subject
Is it safe to assume he was able to get it healed soon enough in there? I am aware eye gore is something that's a difficult topic for many and I'd rather keep it 'safe' for others, so I just want to find the best way to handle it.
Thank you for your time!
